Site Review | Professional Jeweler

October 4, 1999

One of the most recognized department stores and jewelers on the East coast brings its merchandise and services to on-line customers with an expanded Web site and easy bridal registry. says it offers more than 20,000 items on its e-commerce site. Using Javascript pull-down menus, you can move easily from fine jewelry categories to tabletop, giftware, housewares and a Christmas decorations department. Each section suggests a couple of products on the left side, then breaks the products down into subcategories, including type and price. In the jewelry section, you can even find suggestions for bridal and attendant gifts, from necklaces and earrings to sterling silver bookmarks.

The bridal registry is the most useful part of the site; every couple logged in Fortunoff's registry for the past few years is included here, with lists of the items they still need and a chance to buy the item directly from that list. Guests can search for registered couples by last name or registry number. Couples can also register and select their gift requests on-line; Fortunoff offers a 10% discount on wedding or anniversary bands for customers registered there.

The site's photographs are excellent, and the site itself is relatively easy to navigate, although navigation bars won't always take you back to where you started. There's also plenty of information here about Fortunoff's physical stores plus the trusty 800-FORTUNOFF number posted on most pages in case customers get stuck and can't wait for e-mail.
